Research journals

The research journals present selected academic work supported by the partners of the Health Center in an accessible format. They highlight recent research advances on topics such as the economics of antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance.

« Economics of antibiotics & antibioresistance » Journal

Antimicrobial resistance is a major global public health challenge and has become an increasingly pressing threat since the early 2000s. Its costs are substantial, both in terms of human lives and the financial burden borne by healthcare systems and society. Yet healthcare systems have struggled to provide sufficient financial incentives to stimulate innovation in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.

Against this backdrop, under the aegis of TSE’s Health Center, and in particular through the ARPEGE project and the initiative supported by bioMérieux, TSE researchers are investigating new economic models to support the development of innovative antibiotics and exploring the role of diagnostics in tackling antimicrobial resistance. A selection of these findings is presented in the research reports below.

March 2025 | Diagnostics and Environmental Challenges

This issue features the recent work of David Bardey, Philippe De Donder, and Vera Zaporozhets on the role of diagnostic tests in the effective management of antibiotics and also highlights Ilaria Natali’s research on the correlation between air pollution and the spread of AMR.
"Unlocking the power of diagnostic tests"
"Air pollution and antimicrobial resistance"

Novembre 2023 | Market Dynamics and Innovation Incentives

This journal issue is based on research contributions by Pierre Dubois, Gokçe Gokkoca, Paul-Henri Moisson & Jean Tirole. Their research findings highlight the collective mechanisms that can ensure that all countries, businesses and global citizens embrace the need to change the way we use antibiotics.
"How does antimicrobial resistance impact demand for antibiotics?"
"Can cooperatives aid the search for new antibiotics?"

Novembre 2022 | Patent extensions and market failure

In this first issue of the journal, Jean Tirole, Pierre Dubois, & Paul-Henri Moisson propose a new mechanism for rewarding innovation, taking the form of a voucher that could be transfered to another pharmaceutical company and give it the right to extend the period of exclusivity of one of its drugs.

"Can transferable patent extensions solve the market failure for antibiotics?"
