The pursuit of the Common Good
Born from Jean-Jacques Laffont’s pioneering vision in the 1980s, the Toulouse School of Economics (TSE) has grown into a world-class center for research in the economic and social sciences, a reputation further enhanced by Jean Tirole’s Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2014.
Consistently ranked among the world’s top economics departments—third in Europe and first in France—TSE has built its international standing on scientific excellence and rigorous quantitative methods. Its distinctive multidisciplinary approach enables researchers to address some of the most pressing economic, social, and environmental challenges facing contemporary societies.
Its mission is to produce and disseminate the highest-quality scientific research to help guide public and private decision-making in the service of the common good.
Harnessing Science for the Common Good
TSE’s scientific mission extends far beyond academia. Through more than four decades of close collaboration with businesses, public institutions, and policymakers across a wide range of sectors, its researchers turn scientific excellence into practical solutions, helping to address the economic, social, and environmental challenges facing society today and in the future.

I spent nearly four months as a visiting researcher at TSE during my sabbatical, and it was a truly outstanding experience.
The academic environment is exceptionally stimulating, while the atmosphere throughout the institution is warm, welcoming, and collegial. I left convinced that TSE is one of the leading research centers in France. My colleagues from across Europe were delighted to visit me there, and my research progressed tremendously during my stay.
Teaching a course at TSE also gave me a very positive impression of the students, whose engagement and intellectual curiosity were remarkable. Finally, my family thoroughly enjoyed our time in Toulouse—a vibrant, beautiful city with a rich culture and endless opportunities for discovery.
