Abstract
The objective of this research proposal is to investigate the impact of technological innovation on risk management in financial institutions. Progresses in information technologies have had a profound impact on the functioning of financial systems, from new financial products (structured products) to new players (electronic payment providers) to new governance structures (blockchains). These changes have altered the risks that financial institutions face and the instruments at their disposal to manage those risks. In this proposal, we want to use tools from game theory, information economics, industrial organization and experimental research to model these new risks and to understand the incentives of existing and new players in the financial system to control them. We plan to study financial as well as operational risks with a special emphasis on the increasingly important role of data management in finance.
Résumé
L’objectif de ce projet est d’étudier l’impact du progrès technologique sur la gestion du risque dans les institutions financières. Les technologies de l’information ont eu un impact profond sur les systèmes financiers : apparition de nouveaux produits (produits structurés), entrée de nouveaux acteurs (services de paiement électronique), émergence de nouvelles structures de gouvernance (blockchains). Ces changements ont altéré les risques auxquels les institutions financières sont confrontées et les instruments dont elles disposent pour les contrôler. Nous proposons d’utiliser les outils de la théorie des jeux, de l’économie de l’information, de l’économie industrielle et de la recherche expérimentale pour modéliser ces nouveaux risques et comprendre les incitations des acteurs nouveaux et existants à y répondre. Nous voulons étudier les risques financiers et opérationnels avec une attention particulière à la place de plus en plus importante de la gestion des données en finance.
