Congratulations to Professor Christian Hellwig for receiving a € 2,135 million Advanced Grant from the European Research Council today.
His project, entitled, "Designing the 21st Century Welfare State" seeks to measure how advanced economies treat their most vulnerable members. Its goal is to determine whether existing welfare programs are cost-effective and identify room for policy improvements. Ultimately, Christian aims to provide a scientific basis for evaluating the costs and benefits of the welfare state.
“My coauthors and I are honored that the European Research Council selected to support our research agenda. We are excited to place extreme poverty, including housing and food insecurity, under a scientific microscope and gain a better understanding of how society should help its most destitute members. Designing policies to balance economic prosperity with social cohesion in times of demographic change and rising inequality counts among the largest societal challenges of our times", explains Christian.
