Abstract

Generic drugs account for the majority of prescriptions filled in the United States and have generated substantial cost savings. Their effectiveness, however, depends on the assumption of therapeutic equivalence across manufacturers. Recent safety controversies and regulatory scrutiny have raised questions about whether this assumption always holds. This project uses large-scale data to examine the extent to which variation in generic drug quality may have implications for patient outcomes and health care utilization.
