Biography
Catarina Goulão is an economist at INRAE, attached to the Toulouse School of Economics, and a specialist in chronic non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. Currently, these pathologies are the world's leading cause of mortality. They are called “non-communicable” because they are not spread by pathogens such as viruses or bacteria. However, as they are closely linked to lifestyles, they have a strong social diffusion component.
Her work focuses on preventing these diseases, particularly through the design of public policies that improve the nutritional quality of food. Examples include a tax on sugary drinks or, why not, a tax on ultra-processed foods.
She is also interested in redefining the healthcare system, which has historically been oriented towards curative care. Such model is now being called into question by the nature of chronic diseases. These require a more preventive approach, as well as more regular, long-term follow-up care for an increasing number of patients.
