February 02, 2026 Awards

Violeta Haas (IAST research fellow) and Giacomo Lemoli (former IAST research fellow) have received a grant from the Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) at George Mason University for the project "Measuring Group Segregation and Contact in Space Through Names, Symbols, and Pictures". Program: Cosmos x IHS AI-Accelerated Scholarship Program

Project description: We will leverage recent advancements in AI, along with fine-grained geographic and textual data, to develop novel measures of segregation and mixing across ethnic, gender, and linguistic groups in space. Using these measures, we will study the dynamics of conflict, integration, and discrimination at the micro level.
