Top journal "Science" publishes Tirole research on standard-essential patents

In today's edition of the leading journal Science, find out how J. Tirole & J. Lerner propose to reform the standardization rules and prevent smartphone and other related litigation.  The vague rules regarding standard-essential patents have led to major legal battles in the smartphone industry: Apple vs. Samsung and Google vs. Microsoft, for instance. Jean Tirole(TSE Chairman) and Josh Lerner (Harvard Business School) discuss potential ways to prevent future patent-related litigation. "A better route to tech standards" is out today in Science, a 2-page article in the Policy Forum section. According to Tirole and Lerner in the article, "prestandard price commitments, as well as government intervention, may help patent licensing and standard setting".
