During this conference, Nicolas Treich (TSE, INRAe) will present his book Animal Economics (Cambridge University Press). Animal welfare is often intertwined with economic issues, yet economics as a discipline has largely ignored it until now. This book shows how animals and their welfare can be integrated into economic analysis. Two approaches are considered: the first recognizes animals as having intrinsic value, while the second accounts for humans’ concern for animals. Each approach raises its own challenges and difficulties, which will be discussed during the presentation.
