Abstract

This HDR thesis brings together a body of research at the intersection of structural econometrics and industrial organization, with a particular focus on developing new methods to analyse empirical games of incomplete information and applying these tools to understand a range of markets—including auction and procurement markets, digital markets, pharmaceutical and healthcare markets, and cultural markets.

My work spans three interconnected research programs: (I) structural econometric methods for analysing markets with asymmetric information, (II) pricing, competition and incentives, and (III) structural demand estimation. A unifying thread across these areas is the focus on how information asymmetries, market structure, and market design shape economic outcomes and welfare.

The first program is primarily methodological: it develops quantile-based tools that recover unobserved heterogeneity — private values, costs, types — from the strategic behaviour that this heterogeneity generates.

The second program is primarily applied: it studies how pricing instruments and payment design — including platform fees, in-app price tiers, reimbursement schemes, and prospectively set prices — shape the behaviour of firms and consumers in digital and publicly funded markets.

The third program uses structural demand estimation to revisit a classic question in industrial organization: to what extent does the entry of new products expand total demand or divert demand from existing products in markets with highly differentiated products?
