Abstract:
Electricity is an essential good in our society. Not only it supports us with light and warmth; it also is the basic element of our industrial value chain. Since more than one decade, a political change of mindset has led to the liberalization of the European power market. Within this new framework, power exchanges role is to ensure a transparent and reliable wholesale price formation mechanism by matching supply and demand at a fair price. EPEX SPOT is the exchange for the power spot markets of France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. EPEX SPOT also plays an important role in the integration of the European power market, on the basis of the daily run of market coupling between European countries which enables the optimal management of crossborder flows. It is also at the heart of new challenges brought about by the energy transition and the necessary integration of renewables in the power system.
