DESCRIPTION:Michela Boldrini (Bocconi University)\, “Taming Tech Giants’ Al
gorithms: An analysis of consumers’ choices on Amazon”\, Economics of Plat
 forms Seminar\, March 5\, 2026\, 14:00–15:00\, Zoom.\n\nOnline marketplace
s rely on opaque ranking algorithms that steer consumers’\nchoices. We stu
dy how transparency about such algorithms affects consumer\nbehavior on Am
 azon’s marketplace\, focusing on the Buy Box—the feature that\npreselects
a default seller for most products. We conduct an online (framed)\nfield e
xperiment with Italian Amazon users\, varying the amount of information\np
rovided about the Buy Box to study resulting changes in consumer search an
d deal selection. Informing consumers increases their willingness to inspe
ct alter-\nnatives and reduces reliance on the default deal\, without incr
easing search time\nor effort. At the end of the experiment\, most partici
pants hold critical views of\nthe Buy Box mechanism and are willing to pay
a fee to opt out of it in favor of a\ncustomized selection service. Our r
esults highlight how a limited understanding\nof platform algorithms reinf
orces consumer inertia and demonstrate that simple information interventio
ns can improve welfare without altering platform design.
