DESCRIPTION:Joakim Weill (Federal Reserve Board)\, “Pricing Protection: Cre
dit Scores\, Disaster Risk\, and Home Insurance Affordability”\, Environme
 ntal Economics Seminar\, Toulouse: TSE\, May 18\, 2026\, 11:00–12:15\, roo
m Auditorium 4.\n\nWe use 70 million policies linked to mortgages and prop
erty-level disaster risk to\nshow that credit scores impact homeowners ins
urance premiums as much as disaster\nrisk. Homeowners with low credit pay
24% more for identical coverage than high–creditscore\nhomeowners. Leverag
ing a natural experiment in Washington State\, we find that\nbanning the u
se of credit information considerably weakens the relationship between\ncr
edit score and pricing. We discuss the role of credit information in prici
ng and show\nthat\, although insurance is often overlooked in discussions
of home affordability\, a low\ncredit score increases premiums roughly as
much as it raises mortgage rates.
