DESCRIPTION:Pauline Grosjean\, “HeforShe: Bargaining Power\, Parental Belie
 fs\, and Parental Speech Investments”\, Behavior\, Institutions\, and Deve
 lopment Seminar\, June 18\, 2026\, 09:30–10:30\, revised June 10\, 2026\,
room Auditorium 4.\n\nWe estimate a model of intra-household allocation of
time-intensive parental investments. To address the identification challe
nge of separating preferences\, expectations\, and bargaining power\, we l
everage a unique data combination. First\, we derive the quantity and qual
ity of maternal and paternal speech from day-long audio recording using a
stateof-the-art neural network classifier. Second\, we elicit expectations
from each parent about the returns to speech. Third\, we exploit hyper-lo
cal variation in female bargaining power arising from inheritance practice
 s. Our model and estimation reveal how female bargaining power influences
paternal investments: fathers provide more and higher-quality speech inves
tments when women have greater bargaining power\, but only when mothers ex
pect investments to improve child language development. These results alig
n with a collective model in which powerful women elicit paternal investme
nt when they believe it is productive. Our results highlight the role of e
conomic power rather than broader social status in driving these investmen
 ts.
