DESCRIPTION:Huseyin Yildirim (Duke University)\, “Managing Skills and Signa
ls: Firm Training with Career-Concerned Workers”\, Industrial Organization
  seminar\, TSE\, March 9\, 2026\, 14:15–15:30\, room Auditorium 4.\n\nWe s
tudy how firms design training content to manage the skill distribution of
careerconcerned workers. Core training builds common skills\, leveling th
e playing field for promotions\, whereas idiosyncratic training (e.g.\, me
ntorship) builds unique skills that improve the signaling value of promoti
ons. We show that firms optimally bias the mix toward core training to att
ract workers and boost overall performance\, despite dampening e§ort. Unli
ke the existing work\, firms over-certify training to amplify career conce
rns and may sponsor general (transferable) training in competitive labor m
arkets. We also analyze how promotional pay gaps\, asymmetric information
about performance\, and cohort size affect training design.
