 tition and innovation is difficult to disentangle\, as exogenous\nvariatio
 n in market structure is rare. The 1952 breakup of Germany’s leading chemi
 cal\ncompany\, IG Farben\, represents such a disruption. After the Second 
 World War\, the Allies\noccupying Germany imposed the breakup because of I
 G Farben’s importance for the German\nwar economy instead of standard anti
 trust concerns. In technologies where the breakup reduced\nconcentration b
 y creating multiple successor firms with technological capabilities\, pate
 nting\nincreased strongly\, predominantly by domestic firms unrelated to I
 G Farben. The increase\nin patenting is not driven by alternative explanat
 ions such as product market competition\, an\nincreased propensity to pate
 nt\, duplication of research\, or mobility of IG Farben inventors.\nInstea
 d\, the breakup seems to have increased innovation among the IG Farben suc
 cessors\,\nwhich then spilled over to the broader industry: The IG Farben’
 s successors also increased\ntheir patenting activities and specialized re
 lative to the pre-breakup period.
