DESCRIPTION:Luca Braghieri (Bocconi University)\, “Frictions in News Consum
ption: Evidence from Social Media”\, Behavior\, Institutions\, and Develop
 ment Seminar\, December 4\, 2025\, 11:00–12:30\, room Auditorium 4.\n\nWe
document pervasive frictions in news consumption on social media\, and tes
t interventions\ndesigned to address them through a large field experiment
on Facebook. We find that a simple\,\nplatform-integrated interface promp
ting active choice significantly and persistently reduces the\npartisan sl
ant of users’ Facebook news portfolios\, while coupling this interface wit
h information\nsubstantially improves portfolio reliability. Our intervent
ions also increase alignment between\nusers’ stated preferences and their
Facebook portfolios and influence off-platform news\nconsumption. The resu
lts underscore the promise of simple\, behaviorally-informed\, and scalabl
e\ninterventions to improve news consumption on social media platforms.
