DESCRIPTION:Lassi Ahlvik (University of Helsinki\;Helsinki Graduate School
of Economics)\, “Household-Level Responses to the European Energy Crisis”\
 , Environmental Economics Seminar\, Toulouse: TSE\, May 12\, 2025\, 11:00–
12:15\, room Auditorium 4.\n\nThis paper studies household responses to a
sharp energy price increase. Using Finnish\nhousehold-level microdata from
the 2022 European Energy Crisis\, we exploit quasi-random\ncontract expir
ation dates to identify adjustments across key margins: energy use\, earni
ngs\,\nfinancial distress\, and residual consumption. High- and middle-inc
ome households primarily\nreduce electricity use and modestly increase ear
 nings\, whereas low-income groups lack these\nadjustment channels\, facing
rising defaults and cutbacks in other spending. Households with\nan antic
ipation period adjust electricity use in advance\, softening the impacts o
f the price\nshock. We apply these results to quantify the incidence of a
 hypothetical carbon price.
