DESCRIPTION:Jay Pil Choi (Michigan State University)\, ““Sherlocking” and P
latform Information Policy”\, Economics of Platforms Seminar\, March 4\, 2
 025\, 14:00–15:00\, Zoom Meeting.\n\nPlatform-run marketplaces may exploit
third-party sellers’ data to develop competing products but the threat of
future competition can deter sellers’ entry. We explore\nhow this trade-o
ff affects the platform’s entry on the marketplace and the referral fee\ni
t charges to the third-party sellers. We first characterize the platform’s
optimal fee\nunder different degrees of commitment on its own entry polic
 y. We show that full commitment maximizes not only the platform’s payoff b
ut also consumer surplus\, as the\nassociated fee induces maximal entry by
the sellers. Next\, we show how and when the\nplatform’s policy on inform
ation sharing between its marketplace and product divisions\ncan substitut
e for its commitment to entry. We characterize the platform’s optimal\ninf
ormation policy and examine how it interacts with the platform’s fee struc
ture. We\nshow that outright ban on information sharing between the platfo
rm’s divisions can\nreduce consumer welfare as it may lead to a higher ref
erral fee that thwarts sellers’ entry. Our findings highlight the importan
ce of considering the platform’s fee structure\nas a strategic response in
the policy debates on marketplace regulation.
