 \nAdaptation costs are one of the main missing elements from the existing
 \nliterature on the effects of climate change. Policy to address climate c
 hange depends on how\ncostly it is for people to adapt\, but a lack of cos
 t-related data means that such estimates\nare rare. In this paper\, we use
  uniquely rich data on agriculture in France to provide novel\,\ndirect es
 timates of the marginal cost of adapting to changing temperatures. The dat
 aset is\na farm-level panel with measures of outputs\, inputs\, and prices
  from 1994–2018. We merge\nthe farm data with measures of realized and for
 ecasted weather. Controlling for realized\nweather\, we use forecasts as i
 nformation shocks to estimate costs of ex ante adaptation.\nFor the year t
 hat heat shocks arrive\, we find that for the average farm in France the c
 ost\nof adaptation is low. In contrast\, the benefits of adaptation are la
 rge. This difference is\ndriven by the behavior that farms engage in when 
 responding to forecasts. They mainly use\nthe forecasts to change the timi
 ng of planting and harvesting decisions\, as well as their crop\nmix\, rat
 her than to change costly inputs. The large\, observed difference between 
 the benefits\nand costs of adaptation contradicts a widely used sufficient
  statistic approach to estimating\nclimate damages. We further show that w
 hile costs of adaptation are low initially\, future\nperiods are marked by
  increases in costs and decreases in profit\, potentially capturing the\nd
 ynamic nature of farms’ adaptation strategies. Finally\, we show that form
 s of adaptation\ncurrently implemented by farmers are less likely to remai
 n relevant in a warmer world.
