DESCRIPTION:Alkis Georgiadis-Harris (Warwick University)\, “Smart Banks”\,
 Economic Theory Seminar\, Toulouse: TSE\, December 3\, 2024\, 11:00–12:15\
, room Auditorium 3.\n\n: Since Diamond and Dybvig (1983)\, banks have be
en viewed as inherently fragile. We challenge this view in a general mecha
nism design framework. Our approach allows for flexibility in the design o
f banking mechanisms while maintaining limited commitment of the intermedi
ary to future mechanisms. We find that the unique equilibrium outcome is e
fficient. Consequently\, runs cannot occur in equilibrium. Our analysis po
ints to the ultimate sources of fragility: banks are fragile if they canno
t collect and optimally respond to useful information during a run\, and n
ot because they engage in maturity transformation. We link our banking mec
hanisms to recent technological advances surrounding ‘smart contracts\,’ w
hich enrich the contracting space and can be used to eliminate financial f
 ragility.
