DESCRIPTION:Alexey Kushnir (Carnegie Mellon University)\, “Undergraduate Co
urse Allocation through Competitive Markets”\, Economic Theory Seminar\, T
 oulouse: TSE\, September 3\, 2024\, 11:00–12:30\, room Auditorium 3.\n\nW
e consider the problem of allocating courses to students in post-secondary
institutions. We propose a mechanism that assigns course seats based on s
tudent preferences and respects course priorities. This mechanism uses fak
e money and competitive equilibrium to allocate courses without transfers
and has desirable theoretical properties in terms of stability\, efficienc
 y\, fairness\, and strategy-proofness. In simulations drawing from real-wo
rld university data\, we demonstrate that its outcomes improve student mea
n utility and allocation fairness over the outcomes of several celebrated
mechanisms currently used in practice. (joint with Daniel Kornbluth). (joi
