DESCRIPTION:Janet Currie (Princeton University)\, “Doctor Decision Making a
 nd Patient Outcomes”\, Behavior\, Institutions\, and Development Seminar\,
  May 15\, 2025\, 11:00–12:30\, room Auditorium 4.\n\nDoctors often treat s
imilar patients differently\, affecting health and spending. We review the
recent\nliterature on physician decision making through the lens of a mod
el that incorporates doctors diagnostic\nand procedural skills\, beliefs\,
and incentives as well as differences in patient pools. The quality of\nd
ecision making is affected by training\, experience\, peer effects\, finan
cial incentives\, and time constraints.\nInterventions to improve decision
making include providing information\, guidelines\, and technologies like
\nelectronic medical records and algorithms. Economists have made progress
in understanding doctor\ndecision making\, but our ability to apply that
knowledge to improve health care is still limited.
