DESCRIPTION:Martin Peitz (University of Mannheim)\, “Inflated Recommendati
 ons”\, Economics of Platforms Seminar\, March 7\, 2023\, 14:00–15:00\, Zoo
m Meeting.\n\nBiased recommendations arise naturally in a market with hete
rogeneous consumers:\na seller oers a product to a mix of consumers who ca
n purchase through an intermediary\nor directly from a seller. \Picky' con
sumers are uncertain about match quality\,\nwhich they observe only after
purchase\, while \\nexible' consumers are always happy\nwith the match. Th
 erefore\, picky consumers rely on the intermediary's recommendation.\nWe p
rovide conditions under which the intermediary will recommend a welfarered
ucing\nbad match with positive probability\, resulting in in\nated recomme
ndations.\nRegulatory interventions may lead to higher social welfare. How
ever\, a regulatory intervention\nthat prohibits recommending bad matches
 may backre.
