DESCRIPTION:Huan Tang (London School of Economics)\, “The Supply and Demand
for Data Privacy: Evidence from Mobile Apps”\, Economics of Platforms Se
 minar\, February 22\, 2022\, 14:00–15:00\, Zoom Meeting.\n\nSince December
2020\, Apple has required all apps to disclose their data collection prac
tices by filling out privacy “nutrition” labels that are standardized and
easy-to-read.\nWe web-scrape these privacy labels and first document the f
ollowing stylized facts regarding the supply of privacy: (i) 80% of the da
ta collected are used for purposes\nunrelated to app functionality\; (ii)
top data collectors tend to be developed by public\nfirms and enjoy a larg
er market share and better ratings\; (iii) games\, news\, shopping\,\nand
entertainment apps collect more data for advertising and marketing purpose
s.\nSecond\, augmenting privacy labels with weekly app downloads and reven
ues\, we study\nhow consumers react to the disclosure of data collection p
ractices. We exploit the staggered release of privacy labels and use the n
onexposed Android version of each app to\nconstruct the counterfactual. Af
ter privacy label release\, an average iOS app experiences a 12-15% drop i
n weekly downloads and revenues when compared to its Android\ncounterpart\
, with an even stronger effect for more privacy-invasive and substitutable
\napps. Consumers in the US\, UK\, and Canada respond more negatively\, su
ggesting\nthat they are most averse to data collection. We also observe ad
verse stock market\nreactions\, especially among firms that harvest more d
ata. Our findings highlight the\nlack of consumer awareness of firms’ data
collection practices as a key barrier to privacy\nprotection.
