DESCRIPTION:Allen Vong (University of Macau)\, “Perverse Ethical Concerns:
Online Misinformation and Offline Conflicts”\, Economics of Platforms Semi
 nar\, January 11\, 2022\, 14:00–15:00\, Zoom Meeting.\n\nWe study a model
where a large number of citizens learn a hidden state\nindividually on an
online platform. The platform receives news reports about the\nstate and i
mperfectly filters misinformation in the reports\, triggering conflicts\na
bout the value of the state among the citizens. We show that a platform\nt
hat faces an ethical concern to internalize conflict costs due to misinfor
mation\ncould perversely aggravate conflicts. This cautionary observation
highlights that\nsocietal efforts to mitigate conflicts\, such as investme
nts in ethical algorithm\,\npublic awareness campaigns\, and government po
licies\, are effective if and only\nif their implementations are sufficien
 tly aggressive.
