DESCRIPTION:John J. Horton (MIT Sloan & NBER)\, “Pricing in Designed Market
s: The Case of Ride-Sharing”\, Economics of Platforms Seminar\, April 20\,
  2021\, 14:00–15:00\, Zoom Meeting.\n\nA core issue in designed\, computer
-mediated markets is the effect that\nplatform pricing choices have on the
marketplace equilibrium. We explore this issue in the context of ride-sha
ring. Following Uber-initiated\nfare increases\, drivers make more money p
er trip and\, initially\, more\nper hour-worked. Drivers begin to work mor
 e hours. However\, this\nincrease in hours-worked—combined with a reductio
 n in demand from\na higher fare—has a business stealing effect\, with driv
ers spending a\nsmaller fraction of working hours transporting passengers.
This market\nadjustment brings the hourly earnings rate back to about the
rate that\nprevailed before the fare increase\, in roughly two months. Pa
ssengers\nare partially compensated for higher prices by shorter wait time
s\, but\nduring the period covered by our data\, fare increases likely red
 uced passenger welfare.
