DESCRIPTION:Hsin-Tien Tiffany Tsai (National University of Singapore)\, “St
eering via Algorithmic Recommendations”\, Economics of Platforms Seminar\,
  March 23\, 2021\, 14:00–15:00\, Zoom Meeting.\n\nThis paper studies wheth
er market structure affects algorithmic recommendations in dominant platfo
rms. We focus on the dual role of Amazon.com as a platform owner and retai
ler. We find that products sold by Amazon receive substantially more 'Freq
uently Bought Together' recommendations across product categories and popu
larity deciles. To establish causality\, we exploit within-product variati
on generated by Amazon stockouts. We find that when Amazon is out of stock
\, the identical product sold by third-party sellers receives 8% fewer rec
ommendations. The pattern can be explained by economic incentives of steer
ing and cannot be explained by consumer preference. Furthermore\, the stee
 ring lowers recommendation efficiency.
