This researchers team, located in the “Manufacture des Tabacs” in Toulouse, regularly ranks number 1 in European rankings based on the number of articles published by the researcher and the center to which he/she belongs over a given period of time.

As an example, the EconPhD website which allows economics students to compare all doctoral programs worldwide, ranked TSE as by far the best economics department in France among the best in Europe across all economics fields (1st in the world in the economics of information, 2nd in the world in industrial organization). The rankings also placed TSE at number 1 in Europe for Economics of the Firm, Public Economics, Political Economics and Environmental Economics. TSE also benefits from a strong finance unit with about 15 world-class researchers.

TSE scholars have also received many national and international prizes and honors, including three Yjro Jahnsson awards (awarded every other year since 1993 to the best European economist under 45). In 2007, Jean Tirole was granted the highest scientific honour in France: the CNRS Gold medal granted to an economist for only the second time.

In accordance with Research law (N°2006-450, 18th April 2006), the TSE “Réseau thématique de recherché avancée” leans back on a legal structure called “The Jean-Jacques Laffont – Toulouse School of Economics Foundation”. This foundation is a private non-profit organization benefiting from the specific fiscal status awarded to public interest foundations as indicated under law article N° 87-571 (23rd July 1987) subject to legal provisions (article L344-16 of research law). In accordance with its articles of incorporation , the foundation has signed a convention with the French Government that specifies the objectives in terms of international opening and of common scientific strategy implementation, as well as the scientific and financial indicators to control its execution. Its bylaws specify the foundation internal management, in particular regarding the governance, conventions with partners and account keeping.
